A family of immigrants arrives in New York for the first time. They are filled with anxiety and excitement. They know how lucky they are to be here. They want to be good citizens.
Soon, the father is driving a cab by day and working as a cashier at a convenience store by night. He puts in 60 to 70 hours a week. His wife, who speaks little or no English, is at home with the youngest children while the others are at school. When school is out the children return home and stay there. They’d like to go out and play but the mother feels they are safer at home. If they play with other children at all they are immigrants like themselves.
But the father and the mother know that if their children are going to succeed in America they need to socialize with American children. They need to learn the customs, the sports and the language. They need to fit in.
The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans, Inc. (CIANA) was established to fill the essential needs of newly arrived immigrant families. The dedicated staff and volunteers of CIANA know how important it is to educate and embrace the children of these hard-working families so that they can feel they are a welcome addition to their community.
The child-centered programs at CIANA are simple but profoundly effective in accomplishing this goal of creating fun to foster inclusion. And while the children are learning and playing the parents have their own programs to participate in to help them feel more at home in their new world.
CIANA is located in Astoria, Queens, NY, which is at the heart of a thriving immigrant community that includes families from the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa. The Center is perfectly positioned to take these children under their wing before they become alienated and susceptible to aberrant influences.
Except for its overhead expenses CIANA is supported by the generosity, and the foresight, of individuals and businesses in and outside the city. If you can appreciate the philosophy behind the CIANA mission, please help us with a donation of any size. Contributions to CIANA at the address below are tax deductible.
