Spring 2021 Internship Opportunities

CIANA relies on a team of dedicated interns- students and recent graduates especially- to assist our staff in providing all areas of immigration services.

 

All internships are unpaid, but may be completed for academic credit. Explore our available positions below:

Digital Communications Intern

Remote

15-20 hours/week

Unpaid, but may be completed for academic credit

Purpose/Objective

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA), Communications and Outreach team is looking for Communications Interns who are creative and detail-oriented self-starters. Chosen interns will form a team that possesses a combination of the skills outlined below.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft posts for social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

  • Research, pitch, and draft articles for CIANA’s blog 

  • Assist the Communications and Outreach VISTA with producing newsletters and other emails targeted at clients, donors, and partners

  • Design graphics and visuals to enhance CIANA documents and materials 

  • Develop relations with media and community leaders/orgs

  • Assist in translating the CIANA materials into Arabic, Bangla, or Spanish (if possible)

  • Assist on side/independent projects

Qualifications

  • This internship is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, Journalism, English, Political Science, Sociology, International Affairs, Latin American/Middle Eastern/South Asian Studies, or related fields. 

  • An independent self-starter who can manage time effectively to accommodate several projects at once

  • Proficiency in Arabic, Bangla, Spanish, or other languages is a plus!

  • Experience with one or more of the following:

    • Research and writing 

    • Content creation for social media, blog posts, newsletters, and press briefings

    • Graphic design

    • Website design and analytics 

  • Familiarity with Canva, MailChimp, Wix, or similar platforms. Adobe Illustrator is a plus! 

 

Time Commitment

  • Regular schedule required. 

  • 12 - 20 hours a week during CIANA office hours (Mon. - Fri. 10 AM - 6 PM).

  • Spring semester, position begins in January 2021 

 

Training/Support Provided

Interns will undergo an orientation and training.

Grantwriting Intern

Remote

15-20 hours/week

Unpaid, but may be completed for academic credit

Purpose/Objective

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA), Communications and Development team is looking for a researcher and excellent writer. The Grants Intern will be directly involved in the grant-writing process to secure funds for CIANA from foundations and government agencies. The intern is responsible for researching potential grants, and will collaborate with our Executive Director to determine which grants to apply for, to develop a timeline for submission, and to gather necessary materials and information for the proposal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research foundations and grants on platforms such as GuideStar, Candid (formerly the Foundation Center), and others

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Development VISTA to plan grants calendar and

  • application strategies

  • Develop and compile supporting documents including metrics, testimonials, and reports for applications

  • Draft narrative proposals and responses to application questions, and if necessary, draft letters of inquiry or letters of intent

  • Research other sources of funding; brainstorm strategies for CIANA’s financial growth

  • Maintain relationships with donors and foster engagement

Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate students (with at least two years completed) or graduate students

  • Pursuing a degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Writing, History, Nonprofit Management, Public Affairs, Political Science, or a related field.

  • Experience in one or more of the following:

    • Writing

    • Research

    • Applying to and receiving personal scholarships and/or grants for outside organizations/clubs

  • Knowledge of the grant-writing process and non-profit development

  • Ability to meet strict deadlines, including those on short notice

  • Keen attention to detail, ability to articulate, and sharp decision-making skills

 

Time Commitment

  • Regular schedule required

  • 15-20/week during CIANA office hours (Mon. - Fri. 10 AM - 6 PM).

  • Spring semester, position begins in January 2021

 

Compensation

Unpaid, but may be completed for academic credit.

Legal Intern

Remote

15-20 hours/week

Unpaid, but may be completed for academic credit

Purpose/Objective

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA), Legal Services team provides free consultations to determine immigration relief, as well as low-fee assistance with a variety of immigration applications. Our Legal Services team is looking for a highly personable, persistent, and detail-oriented Legal Intern to assist our attorney with immigration cases. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Schedule and confirm new appointments with clients

  • Manage correspondence between CIANA, clients, and other institutions

  • Complete general and legal intake for new clients

  • Assist with legal appointments and aid in interpretation, especially if proficient in Arabic, Bengali, Spanish or other languages

  • Maintain and organize up to date client database and digital files 

  • Perform legal research on issues of immigration law, draft memoranda, and report to the director of Legal Services

 

Qualifications

  • This internship is for undergraduate students (with at least two years completed) and graduate students

  • Fluency in Spanish is required

  • Fluency in another language is a plus

  • Experience in one or more of the following:

    • Microsoft Office and Google Suite, especially Excel/Sheets

    • Knowledge of public benefits or willingness to learn

    • Research

    • Organization and filing

    • Counseling or customer service

  • An independent self-starter who can manage time effectively to accommodate several projects at once

Outreach Intern

Queens, NY

15-20 hours/week

Unpaid, but may be completed for academic credit

Purpose/Objective

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) in conjunction with NYC Health + Hospitals is working to guarantee health care for all New Yorkers regardless of immigration status or ability to pay and to educate our local communities on the importance of face coverings, social distancing, and COVID testing. CIANA is seeking passionate, outgoing, and organized Outreach Interns to participate in our NYC CARE and Test & Trace (T2) education/outreach efforts, two city-wide initiatives.

Location

Queens, NY, IN PERSON

 

Key Responsibilities

Outreach Interns will support our Outreach Worker staff by going into communities, distributing fliers, and tabling at events and fairs, and completing additional outreach tasks as necessary, in order to ensure that all immigrant communities have access to healthcare and are informed of preventative measure against COVID-19. Additionally, interns will participate in remote phonebanking when not conducting in-person community outreach. This remote portion consists of making phone calls to our immigrant clients and/or potential clients, data entry, as well as data maintenance in Google Sheets.  

 

Qualifications

  • This internship is for undergraduate and graduate students

  • Keen awareness of immigration news and issues impacting immigrant communities

  • Fluent in Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, or Urdu

  • Experience in one or more of the following:

    • Community involvement/outreach/engagement 

    • Public speaking/interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team  

 

Time Commitment

  • Regular schedule required. 

  • Immediate start with a 3-month minimum commitment.

  • 15 - 20 hours a week during CIANA office hours (Mon. - Fri. 10 AM - 6 PM).

  • Occasional weekend and evening availability.

Training/Support Provided 

Interns will undergo a brief training with CIANA staff.
