Summer 2021 Internship Opportunities

CIANA relies on a team of dedicated interns- students and recent graduates especially- to assist our staff in providing all areas of immigration services.


All internships are unpaid, but may be completed for academic credit. Explore our available positions below:

Digital Communications Intern (Summer)


12-20 hours/week

Unpaid, but may be completed for academic credit

Position Description

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA), Communications and Outreach team is looking for Communications Interns who are creative and detail-oriented self-starters. Chosen interns will form a team that possesses a combination of the skills outlined below.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft posts for social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

  • Research, pitch, and draft articles for CIANA’s blog 

  • Assist the Communications and Outreach VISTA with producing newsletters and other emails targeted at clients, donors, and partners

  • Design graphics and visuals to enhance CIANA documents and materials 

  • Develop relations with media and community leaders/orgs

  • Assist in translating the CIANA materials into Arabic, Bangla, or Spanish (if possible)

  • Assist on side/independent projects


  • This internship is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, Journalism, English, Political Science, Sociology, International Affairs, Latin American/Middle Eastern/South Asian Studies, or related fields. 

  • An independent self-starter who can manage time effectively to accommodate several projects at once

  • Proficiency in Arabic, Bangla, Spanish, or other languages is a plus!

  • Experience with one or more of the following:

    • Research and writing 

    • Content creation for social media, blog posts, newsletters, and press briefings

    • Graphic design

    • Website design and analytics 

  • Familiarity with Canva, MailChimp, Wix, or similar platforms. Adobe Illustrator is a plus! 


Time Commitment

  • Regular schedule required. 

  • 12-20 hours a week during CIANA office hours (Mon.-Fri., 10AM - 6PM)


Training/Support Provided

Interns will undergo an orientation and training with CIANA staff

Community Outreach Intern (Summer)

Queens, NY

Position Description

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) Outreach team, in conjunction with NYC Health + Hospitals, is working to educate our local communities on the importance of masks, vaccinations, and COVID testing. CIANA is seeking passionate, outgoing, and organized Community Outreach Interns to participate in CIANA’s education/outreach efforts for communities throughout Queens as well as larger city-wide initiatives that the organization is partnered with.

Key Responsibilities

  • Distribute fliers, face coverings, and other materials, and table at events and fairs in various communities throughout Queens

  • Communicate with and educate community members on the citywide initiatives such as Test & Trace (T2), NYC Care, and COVID-19 vaccinations

  • Inform community members of CIANA’s various social services programs

  • Complete general intake of new clients

  • Conduct remote phonebanking when not conducting in-person community outreach

  • Make phone calls to immigrant clients and/or potential clients

  • Enter data into spreadsheets and maintain data in Google Sheets



  • This internship is ideal for current undergraduate students

  • Keen awareness of immigration news and issues impacting immigrant communities

  • Fluency in Spanish or Bangla is required

  • Experience in one or more of the following:

    • Community involvement/outreach/engagement 

    • Public speaking/interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team  


Time Commitment

  • Flexible schedule

  • Outreach typically takes place in the morning-early afternoon (10AM - 1PM)

  • Occasional weekend and evening availability

Training/Support Provided 

Interns will undergo a brief training with CIANA staff

  • Remote interview process

  • Personal protective equipment provided or required

  • All interns are provided with masks, gloves, hand sanitizer when available and must practice social distancing
