Case Management Intern

Position Overview

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) Case Management team provides job assistance, housing assistance, and public benefits application support, as well as referrals to other community and public resources. Our Case Management team is looking for highly personable, persistent, and detail-oriented Case Management Interns to assist our Case Managers with client services.

The Center for the Integration & Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) is a social services organization that works to integrate new immigrants from South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America into the socio-economic and civic life of American society while maintaining pride in their cultural heritage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Schedule and confirm new appointments with clients

  • Facilitate correspondence between CIANA, clients, and outside agencies

  • Complete general intake forms for new clients

  • Assist with case working appointments and aid in interpretation, especially if proficient in Arabic, French, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, or other languages

  • Maintain and organize case management spreadsheets, database, and digital files

  • Organize and maintaining up-to-date digital files

  • Attend virtual trainings and coalition meetings with Case Manager and/or clients

Qualifications

  • This internship is for undergraduate students (with at least two years completed) or graduate students

  • Proficiency in Arabic, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, or another language

  • Experience in one or more of the following:

    • Phone-banking

    • Research

    • Organization and filing

    • Counseling or customer service

    • Microsoft Office and Google Suite, especially Excel/Sheets

    • Knowledge of public benefits

Time Commitment

  • Regular schedule required

  • 15-20 hours per week during CIANA office hours (Monday-Friday 10AM-6PM)

Community Outreach Intern

Position Overview

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) is looking for a friendly, outgoing, and passionate Community Outreach Intern. CIANA’s Community Outreach team engages with diverse immigrant communities across Queens in order to assess their needs and promote CIANA’s services. We also spread the word about community resources such as NYC Care, and partner with other nonprofits, government offices, and local institutions.


The Intern will help CIANA achieve our outreach goals by attending street outreach, tabling at community events, and delivering informational workshops. When not conducting street outreach, the Intern may assist with reporting, planning, and other necessary tasks in-person at the CIANA office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Distribute fliers, and table at events, fairs, and in various communities throughout Queens, and occasionally other boroughs

  • Inform community members of CIANA’s various educational, legal, and social services and programs

  • Communicate with and educate community members on the citywide initiatives such as NYC Care

  • Prepare physical materials and supplies for Outreach events

  • Complete general intake of new clients

  • Light travel around Queens is essential to this position

Additional non-Outreach tasks at the CIANA office might include:

  • Assist with reporting and data collection in Google Sheets

  • Make phone calls to existing and/or potential clients

  • Develop promotional materials and digital content

Qualifications

  • At least two years of college completed

  • Fluency in at least one of the following languages is required:

    • Arabic

    • French

    • Portuguese

    • Russian

    • Spanish

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite programs

  • Experience with community involvement, engagement, and/or outreach

  • Public speaking and interpersonal communication skills

  • Keen awareness of immigration news and issues impacting immigrant communities

  • Occasional weekend and evening availability

  • Comfortability with advocacy and mobilization

  • Knowledge of Queens, its immigrant population, and related topics is a huge plus!

 

Location

Outreach is typically conducted in various neighborhoods across Queens, such as Astoria, Long Island City, and East Elmhurst.

Education Administrative Intern (Spanish)

Position Overview

CIANA is seeking an Education Administrative Intern to carry out basic administrative tasks for our Education Programs. This is a great opportunity for a college student seeking to complete fieldwork hours and to gain hands-on experience in education or a non-profit organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct general intakes with clients and provide them with information for the service requested (ESL, Civics classes, legal services, etc.)

  • Enter new Education client information into our database and Google platforms

  • Assist Education Director with student files and attendance

  • Return calls to current and prospective students and assist them with enrollment

  • Help organize education materials both in the office and online

Additional opportunity available:

  • Tutoring elementary and middle school students in person or virtually

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Spanish is required

  • Interested in Education

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented

  • Exhibits professional and courteous demeanor and phone etiquette

  • Respectful and sensitive to other cultures

  • Experience using Google Suite (Sheets, Drive, Slides, Meet) and Zoom is strongly preferred

Legal Intern

Position Overview

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) Legal Services team provides consultations to determine immigration relief, as well as provides low fee assistance with a variety of immigration applications. While assisting our attorney with immigration cases, a Legal Intern will have a front row seat to this process and have the chance to deepen their understanding of immigration law in the United States and how it shapes people's lives.

  • Translation/Interpretation for clients

  • Schedule and confirm new appointments with clients

  • Manage correspondence between CIANA, clients, and other institutions

  • Complete general and legal intake for new clients

  • Assist with legal appointments and aid in interpretation

  • Maintain and organize client database and digital files

  • Perform legal research on issues of immigration law, draft memoranda, and report to the Legal team

Qualifications

  • This internship is for students with a passion for social justice who are looking for on the ground experience with the legal process

  • Fluency in Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese, Bengali, or another language
