Volunteer Opportunities

Elementary Afterschool Volunteer Tutor

  • Remote

  • Tues.-Thur.,    3 PM - 6 PM

  • 1.5-hour tutoring sessions.

Purpose/Objective

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA), Education team is seeking volunteers that would be great role models for our students by supporting them in completing their homework and strengthening their academic skills.

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Tutors will support the Elementary School After School program by offering one-on-one virtual homework help to elementary school students in grades 1-5. Homework help sessions are conducted via Google Meets. Volunteer tutors might also be used as substitutes for other volunteers at times.

Qualifications

  • Passionate, committed, and engaging!

  • Experience in working with children preferred, but not required.

  • Background in mathematics and/or English is preferred.

  • Stable internet connection 

  • Gmail account

  • Volunteers must be available on both Tuesday and Thursday. 

  • Volunteers must be 16+ years of age at the time of application.

Training/Support Provided

Volunteers will undergo a brief, mandatory training with CIANA staff.

SONYC Middle School Afterschool Volunteer Tutor

  • Remote

  • Mon.-Thur.,    3-3:45 PM

  • 1.5-hour tutoring sessions.

Purpose/Objective

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA), Education team is seeking volunteers that would be great role models for our middle school students by supporting them in completing their homework, strengthening their academic skills, and leading fun virtual activities for students.

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Tutors will support the SONYC Middle School After School program by offering one-on-one virtual homework help to middle school students in grades 6-8. Homework help sessions are conducted via Google Meets. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to lead extracurricular activities remotely, as many of our students spend much of their time inside due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to occasional schedule changes, volunteer tutors will also substitute for other volunteer tutors at times. 

Qualifications

  • Passionate, committed, and engaging!

  • Experience in working with children preferred, but not required.

  • Background in mathematics and/or English is preferred.

  • Stable internet connection 

  • Gmail account

  • Volunteers that are available at least 3 days per week, Mon. - Thur. will be preferred

  • Volunteers must be 18+ years of age at the time of application.

Training/Support Provided

Volunteers will undergo a brief mandatory training with CIANA staff.
