    CIANA Hosts Back-to-School Day of Action in Astoria

    Last Friday, August 13, CIANA hosted a Day of Action in Astoria, where we marked the upcoming school year by handing out backpacks to families with children, as well as encouraged all eligible community members to get their COVID vaccine. Held outside the Queens Public Library on 41st Street and Broadway, Friday’s Day of Action was designed to help families prepare for the new school year, which begins on September 13, and is expected to be fully in person.     CIANA Explains: The Excluded Workers Fund

    Immigrants in New York City have experienced some of the most devastating impacts from the job cuts brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. However, despite being more likely than native-born Americans to hold jobs in service industries, these communities have been the most excluded from government financial assistance. Specifically, undocumented workers who lost income due to the pandemic did not qualify for unemployment benefits or stimulus checks due to citizenship status
